My neutered male cat, almost 2 yo, is on a daily Fluoxetine script for anxiety because he was overgrooming. Within the last two weeks or so he’s started to refuse the medicine and I feel like I’ve tried everything to fool him. I’m at my wits end and worried because he’s not supposed to stop it cold-turkey and I don’t know what to do to get him to take it.
He used to eat it every day inside a chicken-flavored pill pocket treat and was very particular that he liked those and not the salmon flavor. Occasionally he would not be in the mood for one and since he would normally be okay to eat it the next day or after a few hours I didn’t worry too much about him missing a dose. All of a sudden he won’t touch them.
I’ve also tried:
-crushing it up in his regular kibble. He sniffed the bowl and ran away. I took the bowl away so his sister wouldn’t eat the medicine and put down regular kibble. I heard him eating it happily later that night.
-crushing it up in a wet food they love. He licked the gravy and ran away.
-crushing it up to dissolve in pure tuna juice with some tuna chunks for good measure, which he normally goes crazy for. He licked this too and ran away again.
-tried a salmon flavored pill pocket tonight. He was actually somewhat interested in this but refused to actually eat it.
At this point I’m out of ideas other than using a pill gun/popper, which I don’t want to use unless I absolutely have to because the pill popper is so stressful for them and me (and it’s really hard to use by myself). Regardless, I’m totally at a loss. Why did he stop taking it out of nowhere? And how can he tell when I’m trying to give him one? - I’m convinced he knows when it’s in there because he’s never refused tuna or kibble otherwise, although it’s just a hard tablet pill that doesn’t have flavor or scent. Is there anything else can I try?
