I hope this is the proper venue for my question. If not, please let me know and I will redirect!
I adopted my gorgeous, wonderful, and loving cat from the local shelter about three months ago... who won't stop peeing on my couch. He will be good for a while-- especially if the couch is unavailable-- but always, always comes back to it. It has sort of become a fact of life that unless I leave the couch covered with stuff or tin foil, he will go on it. I have tried putting citrus essential oils, spraying with citrus-scented Febreeze, deep cleaning the cushions with OxiClean (the only thing that will get rid of the scent), spraying with Nature's Valley, spraying with Eco-88, putting citrus-scented air fresheners around the couch, covering the couch with a sheet while gone (he peed on the sheet), withholding treats when he goes, plugging in a FeliWay diffuser, getting an extra litter box, cleaning frequently, etc. I have been consistent with litter usage and he does not have a problem with using the litter box when the couch is unavailable, like when I put tin foil on it. The vet cleared him of any medical problem that could be related.
In the three months I've had him, he has only gone twice in other spots-- once on my wool coat and once on my bed-- and never tried to repeat it. I travel with some regularity for work, and it doesn't appear to be affected by how often or for how long I'm gone-- it just appears to be a surface preference.
The shelter staff told me when he was adopted that he had had problems with inappropriate elimination in his last home (it was an owner surrender) but believed it was due to stress from the other cats in the house. He is the only cat in my current home and I try to spend as much time as possible with him when I'm off work and keep a calm atmosphere. Is there ANYTHING I can do to get him to stop permanently, short of always keeping my couch covered with sheets of tin foil? I don't mind that he climbs on the couch-- in fact, I love curling up with him to watch a show, and I'm delighted that he will take naps on it while I'm in the living room (otherwise he prefers the bed), but I'm at my wits' end. Does anyone have any advice?
