I have a pet rat who is pretty elderly - at the youngest, she is 2 years old, at the oldest she is pushing 3 years old. I adopted her from my brother’s friend in 2017 who said she was roughly a year to a year and a half old.
In the past couple weeks I noticed that she was getting cataracts in her eyes, but it wasn’t until this past week I realized that they were developing quite rapidly. I took her to the vet a couple days ago for a check up and ask about her eyes, and the vet told me that while she definitely was showing signs of old age, she otherwise seemed healthy and that cataracts were just part of her aging process.
However, the day of her appointment her eyes had two small-ish white spots in the middle. Big enough to notice, but were not covering the majority of her eye. In the couple days since, her cataracts have now taken over the majority of both her eyes.
Is it normal for cataracts to develop so quickly like this? The vet told me on Thursday that he didn’t see any sign of it being linked to anything other than her age, but I was not able to receive any more thorough testing for her because of my financial situation.
Is this normal? She still has a lot of energy to run around and play, she’s eating and drinking normally, she doesn’t seem to be uncomfortable (but I know animals are good at hiding discomfort). I’m worried and not sure how to proceed.
