My family always had pets, and I like having any kind of animal around. But I've never considered getting one because I spend a lot of time away at work.
Recently though I came across a blog post listing "low-maintainance" pets. Those included Guinea Pigs, Mice small birds and reptiles/snakes amongst others.
I think Mice or snakes (or maybe even other reptiles) might be fun. I generally like reptiles. Especially snakes are amazingly beautiful creatures. Also building a nice terrarium sounds like a lot of fun.
But it would also be nice to have a pet which forms at least a small bond to the owner. From what I understand, this is not the case for reptiles, but to some extend it is true for mice. I doubt I could get both mice and a snake as one if on the menu for the other :))
Do you have any tips on additional things I should read up on before making the final decision, if at all?
One question that is still very much open in my mind is the step of keeping their homes clean. I could imagine building a fairly large terrarium and go bonkers with the decoration in it (plants, stones, wood, water, ...) I have not yet put much thought into how to keep that clean from excrement. The more intricate the terrarium the more difficult to clean obviously...
Has someone got some experience in that area? If yes, do you have some tips?
