Hedgehog Taming?

Hi! I have a little hedgehog named Milo who is an adult that was gifted to me by a friend and her mother. Milo was found in this friend’s brother’s backyard a couple of summers ago, just wandering around aimlessly. This leads me to believe his previous owners had “let him free” after not wanting him anymore which breaks my heart.

He is so cute and I love him so much. But, I question whether him being fully comfortable around me will ever happen because of his past? I have a 2 x 2 cage with a 2 x 1 loft that is very safe and enclosed to avoid injury. It is also layered with a fuzzy blanket and also has all of his favorite toys. I take him out almost every night (I work some nights) and often pull out an animal pen with some of his toys so he can run around. I give him a LOT of attention because I love him!

Even though I give Milo a lot of love an attention, he is still skiddish around me. He still hisses and balls up when I go to pick him up, even in a dark room so I can cast no shadows. Giving him baths is a nightmare because he does not like touching on his back. I see all of these famous hedgehogs doing normal pet things and I get worried that I’m doing something wrong to make him upset.

Will there ever be a time when Milo will be comfortable with me touching him? Or has his past already ruined socialization for him?
