So, I’ve had my dog Apollo since he was 8 weeks old. He only has mild separation anxiety and only in certain situations. He’s only really attached to me in this way, but he’s currently living with my parents. Its almost as if he also has separation issues with their house? In temporary situations like the park or drives he does amazing, although he can’t ride in the car without sitting on my lap. It’s a bit inconvenient since hes 35 lbs and bony as hell but I can live with it.
Recently I moved in with my fiancé and I wanted to bring him with me. We had him there for about 2 weeks and it was nearly impossible. He would pace and refuse to sleep anywhere besides curled in a ball in between my fiancé and I. He would be okay for a little and then just randomly start pacing and whimpering. We had to bring him with us to the store and to drop me off at work because if we tried to leave him by himself he started screaming. Like, really screaming as if someone was trying to kill him. We live in an apartment or else I’d just let him scream, he’s never been destructive or anything. I tried to just keep myself calm because a lot of people said that can help calm them down in new places but I have anxiety and depression and I get worked up by stuff like that too easily.
He doesn’t react at all to my parents leaving him alone in their house. He only cries when I leave him somewhere, he cries after I leave my parents after a visit. I’m getting worried that by the time I’m in a situation where I can have him in a house where we can just let him cry and get used to things, it will just be cruel to take him away from my parents. I don’t know what to do. We have tried melatonin as a suggestion from our vet but I don’t have the money to try anything pricier than that so I just took him back to my parents. He’s happy there and my parents don’t mind keeping him for me. I just miss my baby.
