Hi guys,
So, this weekend I will be adopting a very sweet 2-year-old pitbull. When I first met him he melted my heart. I absolutely had to have him, and the fact that he’d been in the shelter since November is insane!
Part of the issue might be because he is deaf. As you can understand, this makes commands very difficult. He’s house trained, but doesn’t know any other commands.
This is challenging, as I trained my former dog (who I lost two years ago) regularly. Not only sit, stay, come, shake, down, roll over, but I was a large user of the “off” command to signal for him to let go of items or lower himself from the counter.
These are obviously verbal commands, which this shelter pup won’t be able to hear. I was thinking I could sign train him, and although it’d take a lot of patience, it’s not impossible.
My biggest concern is how to get his attention to watch these commands. Especially the “off” command, as I’ve previously used it during “high energy” moments with my former dog (won’t drop an inappropriate toy), and signing might require far more willingness to pay attention.
Does anyone have any advice or experience?
TL;DR: I’m adopting a deaf dog this weekend, and need advice to help train him.
