So, we've had a dog and a cat for two years. They got along very well. That's mostly because my dog, Toby, is very calm so the cat, Reina, will actually lay with him. Well, we got a new puppy, Arya, and she is very hyperactive. The cat hates her. Now, Arya doesnt try to hurt her. Arya loves the cat. She just doesnt understand that she needs to be gentle. She is a very smart dog and already knows to be gentle with people but she just gets too excited with the cat to be gentle. We try to restrain her when the cat is upstairs (she hangs out in the basement but has access to the house via cat doors) and make her be nice to the cat. She likes to nibble on Reina which Reina hates. We dont let her do that, but she doesnt seem to understand. I want to find a way to teach the dog to understand that the cat doesnt want to play like a dog. She can rough house with Toby but not with Reina. How do I do that? Arya is about 6 months so shes still pretty young. The cat doesnt hate dogs on principle (like how some cats just dont like dogs) so I know that there's the possibility of peace between them, I just dont know how to teach her.
