Animals can understand words obviously...at a young age while your playing your cat can bite too hard sometimes when that happens make a loud noise ie ouch, a$$ hole anything you want just stick to one word or short phrase and follow that with biting them back until the meow and squirm stop as soon as that happens it hurts them yes but that’s how animals learn how much is too much. Downfall to this is it won’t work as well on older pets but works great with the younger ones
