Insulin

Hi all,

This is my first time posting here but I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice.

My dog has diabetes with a crazy high glucose count. Vetsulin is too fast acting and causes huge spikes in his blood sugar levels in the span of hours. The vet prescribed Lantus Glargine as it is a longer lasting insulin but the amount I pay for my pup's insulin went from $40 to $305 per vial. The problem is that I can't budget $305+ per 28 days on top of all of his other costs.

Has anyone that is using Glargine for their pet tried using it past its expiration date? Is there a different/generic insulin that could be used instead? Would anyone have any advice on figuring out his dosage more efficiently? Ever since we switched to glargine, we had to start back at 2 units twice a day and have to start his glucose curves all over again.

Thanks!
