My parents’ neighbor was sent to a nursing home and her niece gave me her cat. Advice for moving houses with an indoor/outdoor cat?

My parents’ neighbor has dementia and was moved into a nursing home. Her niece is her only relative here and wanted to set the woman’s cat free because she didn’t want to take care of it. Yesterday I offered to take him because he’s a really sweet cat. He seems to be a young adult but I’m not sure how old exactly. I’ve seen him outdoors often, but he also loves to be inside with people. He is not neutered or chipped which I would take care of before letting him out.

The only problem is that I don’t live in the same (gated) community as this woman. My house is in an open neighborhood with somewhat busy streets, and one street away from a major road. I’ve only had experience with indoor cats and I’m worried if I let him go out he’ll run into trouble. He clearly wants to be let outside though, especially at night. Any advice to get him used to his new surroundings and make sure he A) comes back home and B) doesn’t get hurt?
