I posted last night about a very sick puppy my roommate brought home. I ended up having to call the non-emergency line of our local police department so they could arrange an emergency animal control pickup from a neighboring city because our animal control does not operate over the weekend. The officer I spoke to last night gave my information to animal control so they could call me if the puppy had anything seriously wrong with it that might spread to the other animals. The animal control officer called me today to let me know the puppy had died after vomitting up a lot of blood and that it was severely dehydrated and weak from what they believe to be parvo that had infected it's heart. He informed me parvo can stay active outside of the body for prolonged periods and that the dogs in the home may need to seek veterinary treatment. He didn't give me a whole lot of information outside of that and wished me a nice day.
Both the dogs (neither are mine; I own two cats now) in the house are unvaccinated and my male roommate said his dog won't get parvo because he didn't spend any time with the puppy. My female roommate has scheduled a vet appointment for Wednesday. My question is, if his dog contracts parvo, will it be able to harm her dog even if she gets her vaccinated? If her dog contracts parvo before then, will the vaccinations even help her? I can't convince him to do anything about his dog, but my female roommate is a bit easier to talk to concerning these sorts of things. I like her dog, she's a sweet thing and I don't want her to die. I've never really had to deal with a sick dog before since all of my pets have always been vaccinated and healthy.
TLDR; Roommate picked up a puppy sick with parvo, kept it in the house and let it roam for a while. We have other dogs in the house who aren't vaccinated. What can I tell my sane roommate to do to protect her dog from now on?
EDIT: My female roommate said she didn't have her dog up to date on vaccinations because she's strictly an inside dog and she thought the other roommate's dog was vaccinated. She's all for getting her dog her shots now. Personally, I keep all my pets vaccinated regardless of inside or outside.
