Need ideas re: how to keep my two cats properly fed!

We have a 9 year old male cat who is normal weight; he is more aggressive in general (will shove the other cat out of the way to get to food). We have a 6 years old female cat (chonker) who, by all appearances, eats more food over all.

One of them has been barfing at least once a week if not more and we want to get their feeding situation in control. Our kindhearted teenage son has been giving in to their begging (they know he's an easy mark) and giving them dry food at random times and chonker is just getting more chonky.

I want to get an auto-feeder that will dispense their daily allotment two time per day. I think they *should* each be getting 1 cup of dry food (we give them Iams dry) per day. They also each get a can of wet food on weekends but I guess that's another story.

The problem is that we are not home to see who is eating what. I don't want to keep them in different rooms all day; they are free to roam about the house until we shut our bedroom doors at night (to keep them out of our rooms, they tend to be are midnight head-pouncers).

Any idea on how to accomplish my goal of them each getting the proper amount of food each day? There is probably a simple solution but I can't seem to think of one.
