In the past few months my neighbor’s shepherd, Leo, has shown up in my yard three times. He’s incredibly friendly and has ID tags. The first two times he appeared we called the number and waited for her to load up her kids and drive to collect him. We know she lives in the neighborhood, but is not close to our street at all. I can only assume he’s escaped more often than that and been returned by other neighbors.
The second time we caught him we asked her how he’s getting out. She said he’s able to jump her fence. So she knows how he’s escaping and it tells us that he’s let out into the yard with no supervision for a good chunk of time because they don’t notice when he’s left and don’t realize it until we call. It takes us roughly ten minutes to catch him to be able to call the number because he wants to play and be loved on, so we know he’s not being checked on for at least that duration of time.
Today is the third time he’s come to our property. I happened to glance out the window and saw him standing in my front yard by the edge of the road. It’s not an incredibly busy road, but because were nestled in between two busy streets people do fly down it with no regard to the speed limit. As I was about to open my door to call him over he walked into the middle of the road and traffic had to swerve around him. He was out of sight and earshot by the time I put my snow gear on, and it turns out one of my close neighbors was already outside and able to rush out to him and put him on a leash. She ended up walking him back to his home.
His owner seems like a nice person, but she knows how he’s escaping and has not remedied the issue. And as mentioned previously, I have to assume we’re not the only ones who have found him since we don’t live all that close to his home. What is the process we need to go through to make sure Leo is safe?
