We have a dog (female, protective, just over a year old) and just "rescued" a cat (male, 8, really kind and calm) from someone who could no longer take care of the cat. The dog was curious at first but then the two got into a really bad fight. We separated the two and tried to give the cat some space. The cat calmed down and came to us on his own. We tried to let the dog calmly try to give another try at being friendly. They got into an even bigger fight and now were not sure how to salvage the relationship between the two. What steps should we take into getting them to be less aggressive around each other?
Other info: not really sure who started the fight, it was too fast and seemed mutual. Cat used to live with a dog and really got along with it very well. The dog used to live with a cat and they were really close too.
