Very picky kitty with urinary crystals

Okay so I'm gonna try my hardest to keep this concise but there is just a lot of stuff to say and I'm also a little worried about my furry friend.

So, my cat, Oreo, who is just under 9 years old (male, neutered, indoor, slightly overweight) started peeing in random places a few years ago. It got progressively worse until we decided to take him to the vet, got a pee sample, the whole shebang. So we find out he has urinary crystals. Vet recommends the Royal Canin Urinary SO diet. It was a bit pricey for me so I decided to wait on it. At the time I was also living at my moms house and she also has a cat. I was trying to feed my cat grain free fry good and grain free wet because that's what I had read about in my research to find out what would be best for him. So I try to get him on that, but of course there being two cats and my mom wanting to buy the cheapest Costco cat food she could buy, he wasnt really eating the food I was trying to give him.

So, flash forward to December 2018, we have a new kitten, Loki, got him in August, so he was on the Purina Kitten Chow. Now Oreo would never ever eat his own food, he always wanted the kitten food, so finally in late December we decided to Switch Loki to adult food because he was almost 7 months old anyway and just keep him on the kitten wet food so that he could get the extra nutrients or whatever. So now, Oreo has to eat the grain-free because theres nothing else. Well, a few days after this happened we noticed him acting funny and crying. Took him to the vet, he had a blockage. He had to have a procedure and stay at the vet for a few days. So now, we are really worried because he almost died and it could happen again. The vet recommended Royal Canin Urinary SO again but I declined because Oreo is super picky and wont eat most foods. I didnt want to spend the money on the food, knowing that he wouldn't eat it because they did give us a sample when he was diagnosed with the crystals.

Anyway, so that's where we are today. I've been giving him Purina Natrels Grain-Free Cat Chow which he LOVES and in the morning I mix that food with some chicken broth and some Crave wet food into this weird soup and he like gobbles it up and begs for it every morning. He has never liked food so much before so that has made me happy because I was thinking I've made the right decision, he loves his food and it's going to help him... but is it? I want some professional opinions. Given his history and pickiness, what should I do? Is he okay with what he is eating now? Should I try to get him on the Urinary SO diet? His peeing has gone back to normal and he has seemed more himself lately than he has in a long time so I feel like I'm worrying about nothing but the scare we had last month with the blockage... I'm just worried itll happen again and I want to make sure that I'm doing what's best for him.

Sorry again for this novel... I do like to prattle on when I'm worried and anxious lol if you read through it all... thanks! Haha. Hopefully one of you can help me ease my worries lol.
