Advice on pets that don't need an enclosed fence

Hi,

I'd like to get a pet. Preferably a dog but any type of pet that I don't have to keep in a cage.

Our house doesn't have a fully enclosed fence so I'm worried when I am away for the day at work they'll leave the house, might get run over. I'd prefer a breed or species that don't wander off far.

I used to have a couple bird's but then they escaped when they were out of their cage and mum opened the back door. Had fish, I think they all had heart attacks when my mum slammed the door and they all died instantly. I used to have a dog as well 12 years ago but mum opened the door while I was at my neighbors and Lucy (old dog) couldn't stand being away from me so immediately ran out and across the road to me. Unfortunately got run over.

I haven't had a pet since then cause every pet my parent's cared for of mine, another rabbit, hamster all ran away when mum and dad took them outside.

I've moved out and wan't another pet that will hopefully live longer than a year with me. Due to my past experiences I am hoping a really calm pet that can handle being left alone for 9 - 5 everyday and doesn't wander far.I don't really like cats unfortunately and in Tasmania we have enough cats killing the native animals.

Or do you guys think I should just not curse another animal? I'm more anxious about getting a pet than anything right now. I just hope they stay ok.
