Cat ownership for the legally blind

Hello Reddit,

First of all, I'm new around here to bear with me!.

Since I was a child, my mother has always wanted to get a cat, but there's a problem, she has a rare eye condition called Retinal Pigmentosa, at her current stage, she can only see what's directly in front of her,. This unfortunate condition causes her to bump and trip on a lot of things around the house. Cats being cats, it would probably stay in really bad spots like the stair well, go around her legs while she's walking around or sit somewhere on the sofa where she wouldn't see it.. Does anyone here know anybody with a vision problem and has pets? do pets catch on to these sort of things? is there anything an owner can do to be more aware of where their cat might be hiding? like a collar bell or something?

I included a picture of what living with RP looks like, just so people who aren't familiar with the condition get an idea.

Thanks!
