Hi, so first thing is first- my boyfriend and I adopted a feral kitten that was found by herself around 5 weeks old. She’s about 10 or so weeks old now. We both work full time and often have other obligations on top of work so I hate to have her by herself so much, but my boyfriend is vehemently against getting another kitten.
Anyway, she just seems to have way too much energy all the time and she’s constantly destructive. We have two different kinds of scratching “posts” (one vertical and one flat) but she constantly scratches the couch. I cannot move her from the couch to her post to redirect her because if I get anywhere near her, she will playfully scratch and bite the crap out of my hands. Which brings me to my next point...
She bites my hands and feet/ankles CONSTANTLY. It’s never in a way that hurts and it’s always clearly in play, but I’ve tried everything under the sun to discourage this behaviour and she is only getting worse and worse. I NEVER use hands or body parts as toys. If she starts to bite something, I will usually hiss or say ow, and then walk away into another room, withdrawing all attention. When she lets me pet her nicely, I reward her with treats and praise. Somehow, she is still just biting me all the time, and it’s mostly me more than anyone else.
The only time I can really pet her or “cuddle” with her is when she’s tired out or sleeping, and she usually does that away from me. If I approach and put my hands near her, she usually gets back into play mode right away. I play with her often and when I’m home, I spend almost all my time with her.
Right now I have a kitten that is destructive that I can rarely pet or play with nicely. I want to have a kitten that I can actually pet and cuddle with and actually enjoy being in the same room with. Please, PLEASE, give me any advice that you have!
