Cat poop smells like death due to new high protein diet? Does it ever calm down?

One of our kitties started being a bit of an overgroomer, so we took her to the vet, made sure it wasn’t worms or fleas, got her poop checked, etc. Vet said it could be allergies so we are trying out a new cat food prescribed to us by the vet, a high protein rabbit-and-peas-only dry food, to hopefully eliminate food allergies as a cause.

But oh my god... the SECOND the cats poop, the smell of it fills the entire house. And it smells so bad, it’s like it burns my nose. We scoop asap, but every time it’s like a bomb went off and instantly released a huge cloud of noxious gas that smells like the inside of a septic tank. We can’t have guests over anymore... the last time we did, they spent the evening with their shirt over their nose.

The cats’ poop smelled normal-bad on their old cat food—but on the new cat food it is just unbearable. I read that high protein diets will do this. Do their poops ever calm down eventually? Does anyone have any experience with this?
