I've had my cat for 9 years, and he's approximately 12 years old. He hasn't been much trouble at all until about a year ago when he started pooping occasionally in the bathtub.
More recently, after we've moved he's taken to shitting wherever he pleases, which includes the litter box about 50% of the time. He hasn't (knock on wood) peed outside the litter box yet. One day, we found 6 spots where he pooped out of the litter box.
Now, we just bought a nice home that we worked very hard for and i feel like he's destroying it. I have done everything I can think of to remedy this problem. We have two other cats, and a total of 6 litter boxes on multiple stories of the house. We clean the litter boxes out daily. The litter boxes do not have lids, they're easily accessible with no obstacles in the way, and we've even started leaving the lights on in the room where they are.
At first we thought maybe the other cats were bullying him near the litter boxes, but now several times we've noticed him pooping whenever he wants when the other cats are far away from him. This morning, he was frantically pawing on my roommate's door and when I went to see what was going on, I saw him run from the door to poop down the hall.
When the incident first occurred with him pooping in the tub, we took him to the vet. In fact, we've taken him to the vet 2 or 3 times in the last year and they say everything is fine except a thyroid problem which is being treated and he has medicine for. Then they said maybe he has arthritis.. well, he may, be he purposely goes out of his way to poop in rooms that require him to use stairs and walk further. He gets around great.
I'm currently 9 months pregnant and working full time. I will be working full time once the child is 6 weeks old again, and I don't have the time nor patience to deal with this anymore. I was crying on my way to work this morning because I'm so frustrated and depressed about this.
Is there anything else I could try?
