Does being in a carrier calm cats down during car rides?

I’m moving in a few weeks for school and my new place is going to be about a 6 hour drive away. I’ve taken my cat on shorter car rides before (up to an hour) without a carrier. I know that many people say that carriers are necessary in case your cat is scared and tries to escape when you open the door. I just hold her in my lap with her harness on. She doesn’t ever try to get away from me so I’m really not worried at all about her trying to escape, especially since she will be wearing her harness.

Being in the car is still a stressful experience for her though, which is why I partly like having her in my lap so I can pet her and comfort her. She usually calms down and stops meowing within 10 minutes and purrs for the rest of the car ride. I don’t really know if theyre happy purrs or stressed purrs though.

Will a carrier make my cat less stressed? I know that sometimes cats like to be in dark, enclosed spaces when theyre scared. I used to take her on car rides in her carrier when she was a realy small kitten, and she would freak out about being trapped and alone and try to claw her way out. I think I’m also apprehensive about having her in a carrier because I don’t want her to be crying and scared for 6 hours by herself in a carrier. If she’s going to be stressed no matter what, I’d rather have her in my lap to comfort her. That could be more for my benefit than hers though since I’m not 100% sure her purring is not just her trying to calm herself down.

Any other tips regarding moving with a cat would also be appreciated
