I sort of have two things I'm debating:
Whether I should adopt from a shelter or from a breeder?
Should I get two kittens from the same home/shelter/litter or should I get two kittens from two separate locations?
[I would also love some opinions about the breeds I'm considering]
Some background: I'll be graduating in August, I got a great job lined up and a good apartment selected (sort of a luxury place, very spacious). I've got budgets worked out for everything from pet insurance to cute cat fountains but I don't know I should go about actually adopting my new family members. I've long since decided to adopt two kittens as I'll be working a standardish 8-5 job and I don't want them to be lonely.
However, I don't know how I should go about actually acquiring my new children. The breeds I'm considering are the Ragdoll, Maine Coon, and the Manx. Unfortunately, I live in Louisiana and these breeds don't pop up too often in shelters, even when they do, whether they are even partly that breed is debatable. In addition, I really want the particular traits that these breeds *tend* to possess.
I've already vetted breeders I intend to adopt from but should I even spend $1500+ for a pedigreed cat when 1) There are so many adorable kittens that need homes and 2) I don't need a "show quality" kitten? Should I trade money for more predictable traits? After all, I chose these particular breeds for their sweet and puppy-like nature. I understand that not all cats conform to their breed but many do. Certainly, a mixed cat could display those same traits? Does pedigree even matter, is it even worth it? Money isn't an issue. I have about 5k set aside for this but is that really, from an objective standpoint, the smartest move?
Secondly, should I get two cats from the same shelter/home/litter or does it matter if I adopt two from separate places? If I choose to get kittens from a breeder, I was thinking of getting one Maine Coon and one Ragdoll. If I was adopting from a shelter, I'd probably get siblings. Does it matter if the cats are well-socialized? Would they be simply more comfortable in a new home with a familiar face? I ask because I want to do the best possible for any pet I get.
I know it's a lot to read. If you've made it this far, thanks for reading until the end. I'd love advice and opinions on both questions and on the breeds. I'll try to answer any questions in a timely manner. Thanks!
