In-laws don't want me to spend money on their dog

I asked my in laws if they wanted me to make a grooming appointment for their dog, since I was getting a discount grooming appointment for mine. They said no that they couldn't afford to and I should hold off. I said I was planning on paying for it and they said no I don't need to keep spending money on their dog and they'll do it when they can afford it. I know even when they have the money to pay for it they won't make an appointment though, they don't care about stuff like that.

I had already taken their dog to the vet to get all of her vaccines and stuff so I could start taking her places with me and my/my husband's dog.

I don't understand why they would be bothered by me paying to get this stuff done with her, when they had the money and just didn't bother doing it. I got a job at a place I can take my dog, so I've been taking their dog too. My mother in law said I shouldn't take them every time and I should just make it a special occasion.

It's confusing to me since I like spending time with my dog, and their dog, so I don't mind paying for this stuff and they seem to be getting upset. My mother in law just kind of shrugged when I said I'd be worried about my dog getting out and nobody checking to see if he's microchipped. She said she'd look for her dog for a couple of days, but wouldn't look after that and said it'd just be an "oh well" thing.
