Our stray dog is afraid of me and I don’t know how to approach him

My parents went to Spain last summer and found two puppies in a box on the side of the road. They took them to the house of the friend they were staying with, and the friend took a puppy and they took a puppy as well.

When they got back home the dog was so sweet and cuddled up to me a lot. I was head over heels for the little guy. But it was summer then and a month later I had to get back to college and thus wasn’t home a lot for the rest of the year.

My mom went to the vet with him throughout the year, he’s perfectly healthy, was 5 months old when my parents found him. He looks like a normal Yorkshire but I think he’s a mutt (not sure which other breed of dog though). The vet is also sure that the dog has suffered through some abuse in Spain.

I came home after being in my college town for a while and he suddenly was very afraid of me. He would run away when he saw me and growl at me. My mom told me he doesn’t do this at my parents and my little sister, since they are there all the time, but he is very afraid of strangers.

I’m now home for the summer for almost a month now, but his behavior towards me hasn’t changed, and it’s pretty inconvenient since my parents are in Spain again... and I have to take care of him.

Is there anything I can do to approach him differently or do I just have to play the waiting game until he finally likes me?
