Traveling on plane with dog for the first time

I’m an anxious wreck, every bad scenario possible has already crossed my mind. I’ll be traveling internationally with my Maltese as an emotional support animal on American Airlines and I was wondering if anyone has any tips for first time dog flyers? What kind of medication can I give her to mellow her out? She’s not great with other dogs and I don’t want the frenzy of the airport or our layover at Miami (my hands are already sweating over this since that airport is crazy busy) to maybe set her off. I’ve been training her to calm down when she’s excited by using a specific tone of voice and patting her on the chest lightly and it’s been working well but idk whether to try medicine just to be sure. Also can I get some advice for the carrier since she’ll be flying in the cabin with me? American Airlines says the max size is 19in x 13in x 9in. The carrier I purchased is 18in x 11in x 10.5in anyone think this is an issue?
