Two dogs or 1 dog and 1 cat?

Recently, I found out that I'm going to have a puppy. Long story short, a friend has a pregnant dog and asked if I wanted one of the puppies. I love dogs and, by the time that the puppy is ready to be adopted, I will finally be in a situation of being able to get a dog. I also have experience living with dogs and have done volunteer work in a shelter, so I'm prepared to rise up to the challenge of raising a puppy.

However, I hate leaving a dog by itself while I'm at work. I'll be working from home at first but, eventually, the dog will be alone, particularly when not a puppy anymore. Now, my plan is to add some company to the dog. Plus, I love animals, it isn't like a sacrifice at all to add another pet to the house. On the contrary, I know that I would love it.

I just can't decide if I should get another dog - an adult, from a shelter or a cat. 2 dogs would probably get along quite well, while a cat would always be a bit of a gamble. At the same time, the puppy that I'm getting is a high-energy breed - which is fine, those are the breeds that fit my lifestyle anyway. The plan is actually to get a dog that is happy to join me on my jogging. Jogging and 2 dogs, however, is probably a recipee for disaster. A cat would be ideal - more independent and the cat wouldn't probably care much if doesn't join me and my dog for a run, while a dog would probably get jealous (plus, I would feel bad for doing that, even if the dog wouldn't care). At the same time, I'm prepared to make a sacrifice if 2 dogs is still better for both animals than 1 dog and 1 cat. My main concern is that I have animals that are happy at home and not bored. What do you think?
