I own an 8 year old spayed cat, who I've had since a kitten. I moved country so she had to stay with my mom for a year or so until I settled, but she handled the first move just fine. We've never had any major issues with her pooping outside the litter box- the only incident that happened was her pooping in a dog bed of a dog we were looking after.
9 months after the initial move, me and my fiance have had to move to an apartment we share with a roommate for financial reasons. Her litter box has always been in the bathroom, which is where I kept it in the new apartment- there is no other place in the apartment where I could place it as the general living area is all one open room and I feel would be too noisy for her. I have also kept the same litter she has used for years and been fine with.
The first couple incidents happened because someone in the house had forgotten to keep the bathroom door open- the cat pooped in our bed. After that we've been diligent with keeping the bathroom door open. However, after the new roommate moved in, she has not only pooped in our bed but in his also.
We've kept the doors closed, and I supervise her otherwise. She hasn't had any incidents in my bedroom as I've been allowing her to be in there more and more. However last night at night, the roommate kept his door open due to heat and she pooped in his bed.
I dont understand what's causing her to do this. Are there any more steps I can take to be preventing this? It's embarrassing every time it occurs and feels unfair to have to force the roommate to have his room shut at all times. I clean her litter box regularly, and like I said this hasn't been an issue before.
