Our approx 12-15 year-old (adopted, not sure on age) orange tabby was diagnosed as diabetic about three years ago. We have been able to manage his blood sugar with diet alone, transitioning to Dave's wet cat foods that are grain-free. However, last week he was having some health issues and the vet confirmed that he has early kidney failure. Part of the problem appears to be that the cat food we were feeding was high protein, which aggravates the kidney issues. They gave us a Royal Canin sample pack of renal health foods, which our cat has loved everything he has tried so far. However, I noticed the packaging claims these foods are not to be used as a primary food and just for occasional or supplemental use. I also noticed that the top two ingredients are brewers rice and corn- foods I fear are high enough in carbs to aggravate the diabetes. I haven't yet asked the vet about the occasional use on the Royal Canin stuff, but they seemed....unsure about the Renal food messing with the diabetes. Have any of you been in this same boat? If so, what did you do? It seems like kidney health diet (low Phosphorus, low protein) is opposite of diabetic diets (low carb, high protein). While I want to maintain our cat's health I don't know that I can go down the rabbit hole of insulin shots, crazy-expensive cat foods and never ending vet bills. Advice?
