Go to a shelter or do your research with a GOOD breeder

So this is the story on how I got my boyfriend now fiance a puppy for christmas. At the time we already had a dog, about 9/10 year old lab, but he was with my Dad because he was trained as a hunting dog and it was the season. My boyfriend was just enamored with everything puppy related. It didn't help we worked at a local pet store and were surrounded by pets. I decided for Christmas that I wanted to get him a dog. He never really had a dog of his own and even the one dog that he lived was owned by his ex step mom. I told my other roommates about the idea and while one was hesitant the other was excited about for me getting a dog for him. I had been originally looking at a litter near us that would be ready to go to a good home right before christmas. A litter of pug beagle mixes. My friend suggested we go to a mall that had a shop with pups. I had already been there before because we happened to be shopping at the mall and passed by it. I originally loved that shop because cute puppies. The store was set up so that the pups were in modified cribs. Looking back that should have been a red flag. We looked and found a cute tan (buff is the color they but on his paperwork) cocker spaniel. We joked that his long ears and curls looked like my boyfriends hair. We bought him but there was a slight catch. He was 3099 dollars. We didn't know how much he was at the time but we were but on $222 monthly plan for the next 3ish years. We took him home and presented him to my boyfriend. He was in love and named him Loaf. After we got everything settled we started looking through his paper work. And we notice a section that stated "If the health problems are discovered to be debilitating, Company name, Store name of City will provide you with another puppy in exchange, equal to your purchase price." We decided to look more into the store and discovered some reviews where puppies had suddenly died without warning. We we scared and looked into the breeder that was listed on his pure breed "birth certificate" paper. The breeder was a puppy mill. They were under investigation and had an article about the place. For the first couple month we were scared. Even after a night we had bonded with him and were checking on him as often as we could at night. He survived but we didn't end up going to the vet that they had recommended to us (first 3 visits were free but wasn't worth it). He's a happy boy and turning 2 at the end of September. We got lucky but I feel bad for the pups because the store wasn't treating their pups right and from rumors we heard they put down pups that were not sold/sick. Plus we weren't ready for a puppy as much as we thought we were. I post this as a caution to any one wanting to buy or add another addition to their family. Please do your research. Dont support these companies even if your thinking of buying a dog to save it from what could happen. Sorry about the long story I'll post a picture of him in the comments. Thank you for reading.
