I want a dog, but work 12 hour shifts.

I’ve been a dog owner/lover since my parents adopted my first dog for me at 16. It’s been some time since I left the military where it was next to impossible to have a pup, but now I want a little guy. I work 12 hour shifts in a 3/2/2/3 schedule, so I work half the days of the year for 12 hours. I know dogs start getting some separation anxiety after a few hours and I want to mitigate that the best I can. What measures can I put in place now to avoid putting undue stress on a puppy I’ll want to adopt down the road?
