We had a nearly fifty kilo golden retriever (not fat, just large) when I was younger who loved to wrestle - he'd engage in more human games too, but throwing his weight against me clearly made him really happy. My girlfriend and I want a dog of our own, and I'd like it to be large enough that said wrestling is pretty fair - it clearly made him so god damn happy so I want that for a new dog. Thing is I've done a bunch of googling and not only was he big for a retriever so getting another would probably be much smaller, they also seem to have a lot of health problems. He didn't last that long overall and I want any animal I own to have a long and happy life. Can anyone suggest a larger breed (there are other benefits too, girlfriend would like a dog that makes her feel safe walking with it) that isn't so selectively bred so is healthier?
