Currently, my girlfriend and I have two dogs - a 3 year old yorkie (already house trained, has a crate but we never lock him in, freely roams around the house) and a 5 month old border collie (the one I'm referencing in the title).
Our border collie is super hyper since he's a puppy and all, and our current system is that we keep him in his crate for most of the day since he causes a lot of trouble. He does the following:
- run/bump carelessly into things
- chews on just about anything
- on occasion will try to eat something he shouldn't
- still isn't house-trained so he pees/poops inside the house still
This is why we keep him in the crate for most of the day, every day. We take him out every 5 hours at max, but we try to keep it at every 3-4 hours. We also take him out hourly to see if he wants to eat or drink water.
We just felt that maybe we're restricting him too much considering our other dog has a ton more freedom than he does. But then again our other dog is an adult while he's a puppy, so maybe it isn't so bad? One of the bigger reasons I'm also asking is because since we kinda feel that we're not giving him that much freedom yet, we're considering rehoming him.
I've been searching and reading different articles about this, but wanted to see how other people see it and how they think about it.
