My Cat is a sociopath, and he’s terrorizing my dog.

So the title is just to grab your attention, but my cat, about one and a half years old, keeps harassing my dog whenever he comes out of his cage.

Now my dog doesn’t mind being in his cage, it’s not a punishment for him like most other dogs, it’s where he sleeps and relaxes. But now he’s too scared to come out because of my cat.

Because my dog comes out of his cage so little, it’s always a delight to see him upstairs or in the living room, so we end up giving him a lot of attention. However, my cat hates it. He’s out and about all day so we’re always petting him, holding him, etc. But if we take 5 minutes to pet the dog, the cat gets pissed off, sulks and watches from the corner, and as soon as we leave or the dog does the cat jumps out and starts pawing (declawed, I protested against this) at his tail and biting his ankles to the point where the dog has to sprint back to his crate for safety. This happens every single time, and my dog is terrified of leaving his crate because of it.

What I usually do is pick up the cat in some, moderately uncomfortable way and tell him no, and bad kitty before putting him back down, but my family complains that I’m abusing him and that he doesn’t know any better.

Am I going about this properly? I’m assuming there’s a better way to handle it, but if I am, how can I convince my family of that?
