Hi everyone! So my dog loves spending time outside. He likes to run, play ball, typical dog stuff. We also have a lot of small critters around like mice, squirrels, and moles. All three of these he has played with and eventually sort of... crushes them. Then he gets really mopey, carries it around sometimes, pokes it with his paw and comes in with his head down, looking real sad.
I know he’s trying to play because we’ve had bunnies in our yard before and my dad watches him very closely while our dog sniffs, runs, and watches them. We also fostered very tiny kittens and he was the same way- very cautious around them, gentle, but wants to play when they get excited and run.
I know this is totally normal dog behavior, and he doesn’t kill them to be mean or anything, just a dog thing to do. Nobody’s upset with him but he gets so down.
So I’m wondering, is there a way to help him? Like, is there another way I can play with him that kind of gets this behavior out? Are there any toys or anything I can introduce?
Also he has very bad anxiety, he’s on medication. My family thinks he’d be afraid of any toys that move fast. He also doesn’t like toys that squeak or make noise.
Thank you everyone :)
