Pet helping a depressed lonely person?

Hello everybody. This is my first stand-alone post to Reddit, so sorry for any issues. Please do not be angry with me about this topic, I jut want to ask for help those, who have some experience.

I am a working college student, living with my partner in a small flat, where we can not keep bigger animals (cats, dogs). My partner spends a lot of time at work, and currently I have a lot of time on my hand. I get ver lonely. I would really love to have a smaller pet to keep me company. Animals help me feel better, because I feel they can sence your sadness and want to help you. Unfortunatelly I have pretty severe depression and anxiety, so I am afraid that if I end up in a psych ward or if I have a severe panic attack, that I will not be able to care for it.

What do you think, is it a good idea to get a small pet and try to care for it and create a bond with it, or to just get a succulent or something and pretend that it loves me? If the answer is "an animal", which kind?

I am very sorry if this post seems stupid... but I just do not have anyone to talk to about this, so I hope that someone on the internet can help me. Thank you the time that you took to read this, kind stranger.
