Should I get a pet chicken or duck?

I was at a county fair earlier today, and I saw that chicks and ducklings were being sold. The chicks were $1, and the ducklings were $2 each. I wanted to get either one really badly. I have wanted to have a pet chicken or duck for a few years now, but never had any way of actually getting one. My parents didn’t want me to have a pet bird before, and they still didn’t now. I’m still in high school, so I wanted my parents permission. They both declined, and said that we don’t have the right environment to raise a bird, and that it would die. I suppose they are partially right about me not having the right environment, but I was thinking of purchasing a really large plastic bin from target, and having that be the chick/duckling habitat. When it would grow up, I would buy it chicken diapers (which are actually a thing!), and let it roam the house. I was really trying to convince them to let me get one today, but no matter what, they didn’t agree. However, I might be going to the same fair later this week with my friend and her mom. If I do end up going, should I just get a chick or duckling? My parents wouldn’t be too mad, but that’s not what I’m concerned about. When raising chickens or ducks, is it as simple as it seems, or do you have to do other special things? I’m not an expert, which is why I would like advice, but raising chickens seems fairly simple. You just give them a warm place to live, feed them and give them water, keep their habitat clean, and give them playtime and attention? I have a pet hamster who I love very dearly, and he is quite easy to take care of. But would having a pet chicken or duck be okay for someone like me? I just don’t want to get one, and then not be able to give it the best life. I want to make sure that if I do in fact get one, then the bird would be happy and healthy. Also, I don’t have any room outdoors to keep animals, so I would have to keep it indoors.
