I recently posted about separation anxiety advice and I’m a little worried about our new rescue. We’ve spent a week working from home so we can monitor him (we have another dog too so also making sure they got along) and get him used to new things including the crate and his new environment. It’s the end of the week and even though he’s gotten really good with the crate while we’re home, it only takes a few minutes of us leaving the house for him to start howling and going crazy. We tried just doing 20 minutes yesterday and he tried to bite the door open and dig the insert out of the crate.
That all being said, our vet gave us trazadone to try. We go to work next week and he’ll need to be fine in a crate for 8 hours a day. I at least come home during lunch and walk them but I’m afraid his anxiety is so extreme that he won’t be able to handle it. Has anyone had to give a pet trazadone long term? My goal is to use the medicine just while he gets used to his new home, but I’m afraid that he’ll be reliant on it and I’ll resort to essentially sedating my dog every day, which just seems... I don’t know, wrong?
Any advice on the medicine or separation anxiety in general is welcome!
