I had a family cat for 16 years before she passed away from old age in the summer of 2017. She was mean her whole life until she got old and became the biggest sweetheart. I miss her dearly. In the winter of 2018 I decided I wanted to adopt a cat with my fiance.
We met "Rodney" at our local humane society and instantly fell in love. He lived in a room with other cats because of how laid back he was and was easy to live in a cohabitative environment. He loved pets from anyone who came in the room and after pets, instantly went right back to sleep. Not much was known about him, he was picked up by local animal control. But because he was so comfortable around humans, I figured he must have had a home before and got lost on the street. After our background check, we adopted him and named him "Ziggy", short for "Ziggy Stardust". When we brought him home, he only hid for about 30 mins before coming out and eating, using his litter box, and he even cuddled up with me on the couch the first night!
Now that he's in his forever home, he sleeps cuddled next to me and my fiance or at our feet, he always wants to be near us, and is extremely affectionate. The only problem we have with him is scratching the furniture sometimes. Occasionally I show him videos on my phone or computer of other cats and he is very interested. He always bats at the screen and is very curious, like he wants to play. I want to get another cat so that he has a companion and somebody to play with.
I wanted to know what the best age group was for him if I would bring another cat home? I know sometimes cats of the same age group can be iffy towards each other. And if I should get a female or male? Or a kitten? He is neutered and has all his shots. I also dont know if he would be territorial of me or my fiance. I just want to make the transition as smooth as possible for him and get him a friend who he can have fun with! Any advice would be great! Thank you!
