We want to adopt a senior kitty but worried about financial and emotional toll. Any advice?

TLDR: My fiance and I want to adopt a senior cat. Never adopted a cat before and are worried about the financial and emotional toll it could take.

Hi! My fiance and I are thinking about adopting a cat after our wedding. We aren't ready to put in the work that a kitten demands and I've always wanted to give a home to a senior animal. However, we're worried about the finances that come with adopting an older pet. My fiance is in a masters program right now and it's just my income at the moment. He has a good amount of money saved up in case of emergencies so, we won't end up on the streets if we need to pay vet bills. We have waited until we were financially stable to start thinking about adopting. With my income, we have about 200-ish extra every month that we can spend on an animal. We don't plan to use that much but, that's the amount we've allotted for extra expensive. This amount doesn't include food or litter! It would just be used for vet bills or any extra spoiling we want to give the kitty.

However, it will be the first cat for both of us and we're worried about the emotional effects of adopting a cat who may not live long. I grew up with pets and I have had to put pets down before. But, I've never owned a cat and I'm not sure about the difference, if there is one. Putting down a pet is very emotional and tough thing to do. My fiance has never had a pet. He didn't have any animals in the house when he was growing up. He gets attached very easily and he's worried about how it might effect him when our kitty finally goes. We just want advice from pet owners who have adopted a senior cat (or any animal!) about what to expect. We just want to give a kitty a good home and any advice from cat owners would be great! Thanks!
