My dog is a chewer. He loves it and it makes him so happy which in turn, makes me happy. Unfortunately, I'm not entirely sure what's considered "good" for him to chew on, seeing as we have had a few....incidents. So far, he has tried:
-Deer antlers. He went insane for the one I gave him (I didn't know they were problematic at the time) and thought, "Wow! If he likes it so much, let's get him another!" Except this time, it broke one of his teeth and we had to have the tooth surgically removed. Needless to say, that was his last deer antler.
-Rawhide. After the Shattered Molar episode, I asked his vet what was ok for him to chew. He told me rawhide and then tried to sell me some. I declined and figured I'd do some research on it first-- unfortunately, the internet seems pretty divided on this. Some sites say it's great and others say it congeals into a chunk of SuperRawhide in your dog' stomach.
-Greenies. The vet also tried to sell these to me, at which point it became apparent that my vet was very intent on pushing every dog chew he could find. My dog has tried them and is pretty meh about them. From my perspective, they break apart in like 5 seconds and aren't worth it.
-My own chews. I read that dogs love dehydrated sweet potatoes/vegetables to chew on so guess who bought a dehydrator? I watched in horror as my dog ate them in seconds. In my mind, I envisioned them as being like a jerky, something that would take my dog a little while to chew on and something I could easily re-make. In reality, it took like 8 hours and made my kitchen hot as hell. NEVER AGAIN.
I am not open to trying:
-Those Nylabone rubber chewing bones-- I've seen too many poor dogs throw up the rubber crap and I'm not a fan of the company in general.
-Synthetic chews in general
So what is a GOOD (healthy, if something like that exists) alternative for dogs to chew on? What are your favorites? I'm looking for something that my buddy can chew on for awhile that isn't hard enough to break his teeth but doesn't wreck his insides. Preferably something that can be bought rather than made (I've seen several posts recommending boiling certain bones in broths and to be honest, I would rather not risk fucking it up). Unless it's something really ridiculous and exorbitant, I'm not too hung up on price either, I would rather focus on quality.
Thank you! Tucker would appreciate the help! (not talking in 3rd person, that's my dog but I too would be appreciative)
