My cat meows a lot, especially when I leave. Help needed

I recently got a cat from a seller, she's been with me for about two weeks now. He's eating well and is generally responsive to play and cuddles. He really likes to rub against feet and hands, and usually hangs out near where I sit or stand. Lately I've been letting him roam the house when I'm around and doing errands, otherwise he stays in my room.

At times though, he meows a lot at me to get my attention (he'd stop only when I lift him and pet him). I want to teach him to slowly grow out of meowing, so I started to avoid giving him attention right when he meows--i wait a little bit before I check what's up. I just try to look for signs of pain, and try to pet him. Looks like nothing's up. But then just recently, while avoiding giving him attention, he once jumped at me and clung to my clothes with his claws (slightly painful). So I'm now wary about that.

But I really want to focus on his meowing when I leave. He meows continuously and wants to follow when I leave for work. Does this eventually get better? Do I have to be wary of possible psychological problems?
