My boyfriend and I recently adopted a kitten. My boyfriend is Russian and I am American.
So, you know the noise people make to call their pets over? Like, smacking your lips like a smooch a few times, like smch smch smch or by making a kind of clicking noise with your tounge, like clickclickclick ?
So my boyfriend makes a noise I’ve never heard before. It’s like “ksksks” ... like the end of the word “blocks”.
I never pointed out the fact that we each were using completely different sounds to call the cat, and neither did he, even though i found it quite funny.
It finally came up today though when we were discussing what we should officially name the cat. He said “we should name it kiss, you know like ksksksks.” I said “oh! Is THAT what your saying?” And he said no, that’s just the noise people use to call their pets, but it kind of sounds like kiss and it would be a nice name for the cat. I told him I’d never heard anyone use that noise before and that I thought the way I do it was the common way. He was certain his way is the common way. We started to wonder if maybe it was a Russian vs American thing.
This has blown my mind and I’m curious what other people think. It’s hard to describe sounds through text so I hope you can make sense of what I’m trying to say. What noise do you use to call your pet? Is it different in different regions?
