I recently finished college and got a job in a city about 50 miles from where I grew up. I have three cats, one around 11 years old and a younger 8 year old. We've had all of these cats since they were kittens and we have never moved them into a new house... Until today. And I feel awful for putting them through this.
My family house is in a rural area with a main floor and a basement. My family has a German Shepherd that is only allowed to stay on the main floor and never went to the basement, so the cats typically stayed in the basement (where my room was) with the occasional adventure upstairs (they got brave with the dog). In the event that the dog saw a cat, the german shepherd would chase them (but she never hurt the cats).
I moved to an apartment in the city that I work and took all three cats with me, the german shepherd belongs to my family so she stayed at the family home. I figured that they would be much happier in the apartment where there is no dog to chase them and they can utilize the entirety of the space. If I left them home (which my family would have been okay with), they would all stay in the basement almost 100% of the time with very little human interaction (the basement is primarily storage and laundry with some bedrooms). They're all indoor cats, but they've gone outside when we've accidentally left a door open at home. Now they will not be going outside at all as I'm in a much more populated environment and I'm not sure they would be able to find their way back.
On the ride up to the new place, each one of them went to the bathroom in the crate and ended up getting covered in pee and poo. After getting them in the apartment (which I had unpacked prior to bringing them), I gave them a bath and now they're hiding. I feel absolutely terrible that I took them away from the home they've known their entire lives.
Did I make the right call by taking the cats with me?
