So I got my first real pet a few months ago, a small dark brown mouse whom I named Reeces, and I’ve been doing everything I can to bond with him and make him happy with what I’ve got.
He’s fed twice a day (once but larger if I’m gone for much of the day), regularly gets fresh water, he has a wheel, had a hanging bed before he chewed it into nothing, a salt lick, chewing sticks as well as natural ones, plenty of bedding, I give him tubes and small cardboard boxes that he hides in, tissue to nest in, occasionally he gets a little fresh fruit so as not to upset his stummy. He has natural light but isn’t directly in sunlight. A ball that lets him roam free.
I talk to him regularly to make him familiar with my voice, when I can get ahold of him he goes on rides on my shoulders, and when he’s good he gets a treat (half a cheerio, a piece of gram cracker, a tiny amount of peanut butter etc.)
But despite these provisions he just seems unhappy? His ears are normally upright, but he very rarely wants to be taken out, and he spends a good portion of his time chewing his bars. I know their teeth don’t stop growing, but he’s got plenty to chew on? Additionally, he used to let me pick him up after a little sniffing but now he doesn’t want me to touch him unless I’m feeding him.
tl;dr My mouse seems unhappy despite me doing everything I know to make him so, any ideas welcome.
Thanks all
