Trying to get rid of cat fleas—advice?

So I’ve noticed fleas on my cat over the past few months (essentially since I got him). I adopted him from a woman who takes in strays and gets them fixed up at the vet and rehomes them. I’m assuming he had fleas when he was a stray and though the vet may have treated him for fleas, he reacquired them or was never fully rid of them.

At any rate, in June, I treated him with frontline plus. I did that three times over three months, and I was still consistently finding fleas on him. On top of treating him, I was vacuuming my apartment often (and always emptying the canister after and taking the trash out immediately), washing my bedding and his repeatedly, and I even bought flea spray for upholstery.

I am at my whit’s end because I can’t seem to get rid of these awful things. Yesterday I gave him a capstar pill (which was super effective, I found dead fleas in various places around my apartment after that) and then today I bought advantage ii and treated him with that.

I am SO hoping the advantage ii is better than the frontline plus. Have any of you had success with advantage ii but not frontline plus? also, any other suggestions would be much appreciated!

UGH.
