My wife and I "adopted" a stray market kitten (we live in China) when he was around 6 weeks old. We nursed him to health and got all of his vaccinations in order before introducing him to our older female cat.
Our older cat is very timid when other people are around, even if they are regular guests in our home. The younger cat, now around 6 months old, tries to stalk the older cat, gets her on her back and tries to bite the neck. So far we haven't seen any blood but have found nails from the younger cats paws in the fur of the older cat. We supervise their interactions and the cats are kept separate when we are not home. (They both have a few rooms to themselves and separate litter boxes, food dishes, and toys, etc.
What we want to know is that if this is normal behavior from younger cats (ours is male - nurtured, and the older cat is female (spayed). If it is, how should we handle the encounters? Right now, we separate the cats immediately. Usually putting the younger cat back in his part of the apartment for a while before letting him roam around freely again.
Ideally, we want them to be able to be left alone in the house without being physically separated (we have a cat gate to divide the apartment) while we are away.
Any advice and/or tips are greatly appreciated.
