Both my cats are about 9 years old. they have fought since basically day one, at least once a day. I've done slow reintroduction 2x, with no success.
They always fight around food time. It is vicious. They also fight when they think they should be fed. they both have weight issues, therefore i can't leave food for them to graze on. they weigh too much.
I do NOT want to rehome them. However, they are starting to wake my 1 year old at night with their fighting so everyone is losing sleep. In fact, these cats have woken me up from fighting in the middle of the night more than my child. I have timed feeders for them to eat out of, each one has their own, in different parts of the house. I also feed them 2 wet food meals a day, besides the dry food from the time feeders. We've resorted to locking one up at night in our basement.
I also have 3 litter boxes, all in open spaces, with easy access in and out.
the only thing that i may have slacked on in the last year or so is play, but since this fighting has been an issue since day one, i don't think it's necessarily play, but just that these cats hate each other.
I'm just so sad because indivudally both are super sweet and affectionate, and one has really bonded very closely with my husband. rehoming is just not an option, but i just spent 10 minutes soothing my child back to sleep after the cats had a very loud fight in the house.
Oh and they have lots of places to go up high and see out windows. we always try to think of ways to give the cats access to windows and be up high.
Fighting is started by both cats at this point.
I am really tempted to make them indoor/outdoor cats to help solve the issue of territory but my husband is totally against it, which is appropriate, but last week, i let one cat outside, supervised and he LOVED it. Kind of broke my heart i've kept him indoors his whole life.
