Cat much older than we originally thought?

We adopted our cat, Piper, from a local shelter 6 years ago. The shelter told us he was three years old, but didn’t seem to have much more information on him. The shelter worker couldn’t tell us basic facts like whether he was surrendered to the shelter by a former owner or whether he was a stray. He was front declawed and was a healthy weight, so someone took care of him at some point.

About two years after we adopted him, he was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. His vet at the time was surprised to have a 5 year old cat with this condition.

We have since moved to a new city and have a different vet. Piper has been having more issues related to his hyperthyroidism, most recently inflammatory bowel disease, and has been to the vet more often than usual. During our last appointment, the vet reviewed his file, examined him, and informed us that she would estimate his age to be 14-15 years old. This is 5-6 years older than we thought he was.

My reason for posting: has anyone else had this experience? Does it make sense that his age would have been estimated incorrectly at the shelter? Why didn’t our previous vet bring this up?

We are having a hard time wrapping our minds around the fact that we have a lot less time with our sweet kitty than we originally thought.
