Cat Swap?

Until recently, I was living in a single cat (Multiperson) household, the cat being mine. My cat was never invested in staying in my roommates' rooms, preferring my room or communal spaces.

I moved in with a friend, and she also owns a cat. They scent shared and are getting along really well, but the thing is both bedroom doors are open during the day and my cat prefers to sleep on my roommate's bed, and her cat prefers mine.

I've found a lot of reasons for single cats preferring a roommate over an owner, but these two cats have lived with their respective owners for a while and it's clear they love us deeply. My cat still prefers to chill with me, and my roommate's cat still prefers her, but we have no explanation whatsoever as to why they've swapped bedrooms.

It's mostly frustrating for me and my roommate that both cats want to spend the night in the wrong bedroom. Neither of us wears heavy perfumes or does anything to cover up scents, apart from opening windows and general cleanliness.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Is this something that has an explanation and solution, or is it just their expression of excitement of New Stuff that we need to patiently wait out?
